Swimming pool versus open water swims

Swim is a swim, right?

1km swim is the same in the pool is the same as 1km swim in open water, right?

No, they sure are not the same. You may be using same muscle and similar moves, but these two sports are very different animals! Here are some things to keep in mind:

Distance to safety

When you are in the pool, you are never too far from some sort of safety – either the lane dividers or ends of the pool. In the open water, land is not that close. You may have a friend near by in a boat or on a board, but it’s not the same, is it? In open water, you keep having to look which direction you’re going. You may not realize it in the pool, but you are most likely not going perfectly straight naturally. You have to correct for your own asymmetry. How good are you at spotting your destination anyway? That’s one good thing about crowded races when you aren’t the fastest person around: just follow somebody.

You know how far down you can go in the pool. While swimming in a lake, river, sea or an ocean – not so much. That may not be an issue for you, but for many, it messes with their minds. Do you remember when you were little and it was a big deal to go to the deeper water, even if you knew how to swim? Yeah, it can feel like that.

Laps

This is an issue a friend told me about, but I haven’t really given it much thought: turning around in the pool. Apparently for many people, the quick breather when you turn around helps delay tiring, so they get tired sooner during open water swims.

People

This will vary on whether we are talking about a race or just a swim for you and possibly a couple of friends. Same goes for the pool – you may be alone or you may be surrounded. During the race though, everybody is jostling for a position, trying to swim as fast as they can. Nothing can properly prepare you for it. On the other hand, pool is full of colorful characters. I guess they are there to prepare you for the race day!

Other wildlife

Crazy people are not the only wild things you will see when swimming in open water. Pool has clear (I wouldn’t necessarily call it clean…) water. When you swim in the wild, you will encounter plants, jellyfish and other ‘stuff’. I will never forget swim practices in a lake when I was 10. There was an area covered in seaweeds (lakeweeds?) and breaststroke was basically a great way to guarantee getting tangled. Even if you don’t get stuck in plants, swimming through them is seriously unpleasant. Speaking of things that are seriously unpleasant: how do you feel about swimming through jellyfish? The ones in the Baltic Sea during Ironman70.3 Gdynia at least don’t sting painfully. I have been told that’s not the case for Ironman Maryland 😒. I recall seeing something about a possibility of getting hit by stingrays during Ironman Florida. Not cool… So yeah: it’s nothing like swimming in a nice, devoid of wild fauna and flora pool.

Weather

Uhm… so there is no weather in the pool, even if we all like to complain on occasion about water temperature. But the water will be pretty flat. On a lake, or even more so on a sea – rarely. During my olympic distance triathlon in Luray I was pretty lucky and the water was perfectly calm. But that was a total luck of a draw. It wasn’t that bad on the Baltic Sea, either on the day on my race. That’s rare though. Water can get choppy. Swim portion gets cancelled on various races regularly due to dangerous conditions. It can be high waves, thunderstorms or a number of other issues. None of it sounds awesome. Another thing you may not think of before it’s too late: sun or rain. If it’s raining, you have to make sure you’re not taking in water when swimming. I’ve tried that… not awesome… The sun can beat down on you, causing exhaustion and dehydration. It actually happened to me some at Luray. You wouldn’t think of getting hot and dehydrated while in water, would you? Then be warned: it’s totally possible. And if it’s a salt water environment, drinking water around you won’t help. Interesting thing I read in Ironman Florida course description I would have never come up with on my own: you may need darker swim goggles if swimming to the east in the morning, as the light can blind you.

Wetsuits consideration

It’s highly unlikely that you will use a wetsuit in your indoor pool. You should practice swimming in it before race day though. Nice thing about a wetsuit: it floats, so it reduces drag and makes swimming faster easier. Down side: they are tight. It doesn’t sound bad in theory, but when your chest is being squeezed tight (this might be worse for women for obvious reasons…) and you are surrounded by freezing water, it can induce a panic attack. Personal advice: focus on your arm strokes or kicks and take it one at a time. It’s crucial to get out of your own head.

Productivity porn

Pretty much everybody in the world got stuck indoors for at least a while, without the ability to go about their lives as usual. Fortunately, most places recognize the need for people to exercise. I hope you have been still getting your workouts in!

During this craziness, I got introduced to a new term: productivity porn. To those of you who haven’t heard about it – it’s basically posts telling the world how much stuff you have accomplished that day. Right after learning the term, I learned that there is a large number of people who hate it.

There are many days where my social media feeds look like a definition of the term with posts in short order:

And still finding time to bake muffins and do my regular job. I do have days when I just sit on the couch and binge watch tv, don’t worry 😉.

Here is the thing though: I got judged for being an obnoxious overachiever during the quarantine. In my defense: I’m always like this…

I am sure that there are ‘productivity olympics’ going on out there. Somebody will always, without a fail, turn even the most mundane thing into a competition. They are like: so you made sourdough bread? I made elaborately decorated cupcakes as a dessert for my gourmet 7-course meal! Well, I also wrote a book! I speak a new language!

Those people are everywhere. Unfortunately, they are not motivating or fun to follow. They are the downers: they aim at proving to the whole world how awesome they are and that everybody else is a loser. Let’s unfollow those guys…

I always hope to inspire people – make them feel that if I can do it, they can do it too. I want to be helpful and share openly my trials and errors. How many scrapes, bruises and torn pants I have shown off over time… I have heard some people say that I inspire them. It made me so happy! Come join me! Some people may need to live vicariously – I am happy to tell you about my exploits. I will make it more real with some serious fails if you don’t mind 😉.

I know productivity porn is not everybody’s thing. If it bothers you, mute or unfollow. If it’s a toxic person practicing one-upping: definitely unfollow. But if you can spare those people a minute, you may find something that inspires you. Maybe a cool thing for you to try? Maybe they have an interesting view on life or some activity? Perhaps watching their journey will just be entertainment. Either way, I’m happy to show off my ‘productivity porn’ to anybody who’s interested 😊

How I actually got faster

You may remember my post about working on getting faster on a bike. I’ve been working on that plan for ages! Sadly, I was making little progress. Then, suddenly (ok, so it’s been like 5 months, but still), this happened:

Same route, 5 months apart. I will be honest: I did little cycling between these two and most of it was indoors. One of my friends pointed out that my running improved a lot, too. So what made me get so much faster?

Well, there is only one thing I have done in between these two sessions that was not normal (in more than one way 😜) :

Even by my standards that’s a bit crazy! But here is the thing: it did strengthen my legs like crazy!

My running has always been just fine as far as I’m concerned. Not overly fast, but fine. Apparently it wasn’t fine – I picked up some serious pace there, too. But it’s biking that impressed me most. What used to feel like never-ending steep hills now feels like not much more than a speed bump. And the mad respect I get from men I pass on the road! I like it!

So the conclusion is that mad number of stairs climbed finally addressed my Achilles’ Heel of biking on hills. They are here to stay, although maybe only once a week. As it turns out, the key was to change things up with a repetitive exercise requiring more leg muscle strength.

Have you learned anything useful during the lockdown period? Are you coming out stronger or weaker? (I’m curious and not judging)

Mount Everest, Day 5

🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳🎉

Six and a half weeks and I am done with the seven summits challenge.

We have definite answer: it took me 5 days to get to the top of Mount Everest from sea level.

Today’s climb was definitely a mixed bag. On one hand, I felt tired and totally not in the mood for climbing stairs 410 times. Creaky stairs didn’t help. On the other hand, I knew this is it. Once I’m done, it’s over! The challenge is complete! If you haven’t noticed, dear reader, I excel at sucking it up and just continuing. So that’s what I did. I just sucked it up and kept going. I have done it. And what do I have to show for it? The bragging rights of course! One of my Twitter followers said I’m the queen of stair climbing. I am totally claiming that title 😆.

What’s next? I think that’s obvious: Ironman Maryland hasn’t been cancelled yet. And even if it was, there are other races and future years. I will be ready!

Mount Everest, Day 4

Much better… I was in much better shape than yesterday and making good progress. Feet ok, knees ok, no tripping over my own feet. So that’s the good news. The bad news – my head wasn’t quite ready for doing it again. It was a total roller coaster of feelings. At times, my mind was otherwise occupied and I was just flying up and down. At some other times, it was dragging.

At a low point, cheating crossed my mind. But then I started to think: this is a personal challenge I gave myself, no strings attached. Worst-case scenario is having to admit to people I gave up? What would cheating look like anyway??? Yeah, that was a dumb thought and I kept going and checking off floors climbed. I am ready to be done though.

Here is the good news: I did 400 today, so I have 410 left to go. This means I will be done tomorrow 🥳

Mount Everest, Day 3

If I was to give a title to today’s climb, it would be Running on Fumes. It was hard! I had every intention of doing 400 floors, but it was just not happening. I was dragging my feet, took a few breaks and I just couldn’t… Not that 350 floors is something to be ashamed of. It’s just not what I was hoping for.

I think this is an important reminder for all of us: rest days are important. Nobody’s body can take infinite punishment. I remind myself that I have only 2 more days left. Mount Everest is 3160 floors tall and I now only have 810 left. Hopefully, I can finish them in 2 days 🤞. I have weights training tonight with Diana, but it’s upper body. Other than that, I am sticking to staying off my feet and getting rest!
